At the start of not only a new year but a new decade, many of us may be considering a change of direction. Take inspiration from the MegaMow directors, who – prior to marching behind their mowers – had a variety of different experiences. Both believe, though, that experience is never wasted. Find out how their previous skill sets and the hurdles they’ve overcome are relevant to their current roles.
Rob would be the first to say that his early career experiences stood him in good stead when starting MegaMow. “I was managing part of a grass-cutting company by 21, so I certainly knew the basics of this business.” He could also see how the existing business model he was working with could be extended and developed. When his then-boss was reluctant to tinker with the status quo, Rob realised it was time to branch out alone. “If a job isn’t working and you feel that you’re being held back, you have to take the plunge and leave – why stay and be miserable? Yes, running your own business has its challenges, but I’ve never regretted setting up on my own. And of course another great plus about the job I left, is that, through it, I met Quintin.”
Quintin’s background prior to grass-cutting meant he’d always been used to getting his hands dirty. His family, based in South Africa, had a successful business within the motor industry. His work ethic, mechanical knowledge and willingness to ‘get stuck in’ to any job gave him an early advantage. However, he faced challenges in working around his dyslexia. Ultimately, though, he believes it has given him a unique advantage in the business sector: “I’ve seized every opportunity that’s come my way, and I’ve had to be creative and meticulous about attention to detail. I’ve also had to perfect the art of finding different ways of doing things. As my career progressed, I became good at solving problems. I find faults and fix them.”
When Rob and Quinten first met, they recognised their complementary skill sets. They were both quick to learn from the businesses they worked for. Recalls Quintin: “We worked together in a couple of garden-related businesses. One focused on delivering a high standard of service to the customer in a traditional way. The other incorporated the latest equipment to deliver the same high standard of service. Now, with MegaMow our focus is on using the latest software to make our operation seamless, giving customers what they want, when they want it!”
Combining their skill sets in MegaMow, Rob and Quintin have come up with a business that involves exciting new ways to do traditional things. They always keep the mantra of KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) at the centre of things. Says Quintin, “For us as directors, our operators and customers, we believe this is the only way forward: a simple business model, brilliantly executed.”
